Landon has truly shone during his time in SwimRVA’s Learn-To-Swim program at Harry James Elementary. Although soft-spoken, he is incredibly kind, attentive, and consistently brings a warm, uplifting energy to the pool each day. His gentle spirit made him a joy to teach and a positive presence among his classmates.
SwimRVA’s Learn-To-Swim program is a community-centered, results-driven swim instruction initiative designed to ensure that every child and adult in our region has the skills, confidence, and knowledge to be safe in and around water. Rooted in equitable access, evidence-based teaching methods, and a passion for water safety, Learn-To-Swim aims to break the cycle of aquatics inequity and reduce preventable drownings across Central Virginia. The station-based curriculum focuses on specific benchmarks such as breath control, body position, floating, and propulsion, and students move up as they master each skill. The program encourages students to celebrate their growth, work at their own pace, and feel proud of each milestone they earn.
Throughout the session, Landon worked closely with Coach Heidi, forming a strong bond that truly helped him thrive. Heidi described him as kind-hearted, enthusiastic, and a remarkably quick learner. She noted how eager he was to try new skills and how respectfully he interacted with coaches and peers.
Landon started in Station 1, arriving with a face full of joy and a genuine eagerness to learn. On the very first day, he needed only a gentle hand from Coach Heidi to enter the water, but by day five, his transformation was incredible. Landon was confidently jumping in on his own, independently meeting all the Station 1 goals, proudly ringing the bell, and advancing to Station 2.
His growth over such a short time is a true testament not only to his courage and commitment but also to the supportive environment that SwimRVA’s Learn-To-Swim program strives to create for every child.
What an amazing journey. Well done, Landon!
