Sporting a pair of black Chuck Taylors and a “newsboy” style cap, Felicia immediately stands out in SwimRVA wellness instructor Pauline’s Line Dance class. When you walk into the room and notice the stylish sixty-five-year-old moving to the beats, one can’t help but stop and look around to see if there are cameras filming her for a show.
When people think of line dancing a lot of people associate it with country; However, Pauline’s line dance class encompasses more than that. When asked about her movements in the Line Dancing class Felicia replied, “You gotta make it your own…Once I get where you’re going with that (the dance steps), okay cool I got it now. I can make it my own.”
Originally from Illinois, Felicia comes from a family of dancers. Not professional dancers. “It comes from within,” she said. Her immediate and extended family would step or dance to hip hop. They would just move to the beat, whatever the song. She recalls Saturday mornings with her mom where the family would dance to music as they cleaned.
Felicia works full time from home and is within walking distance of Swim RVA where she has been attending Line Dancing on Tuesdays and Thursdays regularly. In her opionion, there is “definitely” a correlation between her passion and lifelong involvement of dancing and why today, she can move so effortlessly.
“I want to move everything while I can. Everything. My neck, my arms everything from my head to toe. I want to move it while I can.”
If you haven’t been to Line Dance with Pauline, you may just want to check it out so that you too can move like Felicia. Or at least try to!
