Located in Chesterfield County, SwimRVA serves the Greater Richmond area as a catalyst for regional aquatics and community-wide focus on water safety, health & fitness, sports tourism and competitive swimming.  We offer swimming lessons, water aerobics, aqua running, water polo, CPR & lifeguard certification courses, masters swimming, warm water therapy pool, land fitness classes, and youth triathlon training.

Lifeguarding Certification Course - $ 230

Interested in lifeguard certification in Richmond, VA, or in Chester, Chesterfield, or the surrounding areas?  The SwimRVA Safety School aims to elevate safety in the Richmond region by teaching students core values of teamwork, honesty, cleanliness, motivation, and work ethic. Instructors will hold group discussions, video demonstrations and hands-on practice to prepare students for an engaging and rewarding job experience in water safety, all while gaining American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen. Approximate course length is 25 hours.

  • First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogen safety training
  • CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
  • Care for head, neck and spinal injuries

 Lifeguard Certification Class Prerequisites:

  • All participants must turn 15 years old on or before the last scheduled day of class.
  • Prerequisite swim tests will be held at the beginning of the first day of the course.  Students who are unable to pass these tests will not be able to continue in the course.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously to demonstrate physical ability, which includes breath control, stamina and strength required to preform saves.  Students are permitted to swim using front crawl, breaststroke, or a mixture of both.  Candidates may not swim on their back or side for this event and use of swim goggles is allowed.
  • Using only their legs, student must be able to tread water for 2 minutes.  Candidates will be asked to place their hands under their armpits for this exercise.
  • Students will have 1 minute, 40 seconds to swim 20 yards on the surface, dive head-first or feet-first to a depth of 7 feet, 7 inches to retrieve a 10-pound dive brick.  They will then return to the surface and swim back to the starting point, holding the brick with both hands.  Each student will have to keep their face at or near the surface and demonstrate that they are able to breathe effectively.  Upon completion of the swim, candidates will exit the water without the use of steps or a ladder.  Students should not practice nor swim this distance underwater.

Lifeguarding Review Course - $150

The American Red Cross review for lifeguarding skills is intended for those who need to renew their lifeguard certifications.  All students must have current, non-expired certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid.  The review course is approximately 12 hours 50 minutes.  Please note that if a student's current lifeguard certification expires prior to the end of this course, they are required by the Red Cross to take the full Lifeguarding course. As an added bonus, SwimRVA has also added the 2-year Administering Emergency Oxygen certification into the lifeguarding review curriculum.

Course length: Approximately 13 hours

Community CPR/AED and First Aid Course - $90

The Community CPR Certification is aimed to help make our community a safer place by giving citizens the instruction they need to save friends or loved ones in the event of a sudden illness or injury.  Courses will cover the following topics:

  • Breathing Emergencies
  • Concious and Unconcious choking victims
  • CPR for Infants, Childran, and Adults
  • Use of an Automated External Defibrillator
  • General First Aid

Payment/Policies

Why do I have to pay at registration time?
  • Payment is required to reserve a spot on the course roster.  SwimRVA Safety School courses are very popular and often sell out several weeks in advance
What happens if I do not pass the prerequisite swim test for the lifeguarding class?
  • Students who do not pass the prerequisites on the first day of the course  will not be allowed to continue.  SwimRVA offers swim lessons and coaching to help prepare for a later course.  If you decide the course is not for you after the prerequisite testing, your registration amount will be refunded, less a $50 evaluation fee for the full lifeguarding course, or a $30 fee for the lifeguarding review course.
What happens if I need to switch to another class or cancel my registration?
  • SwimRVA will be happy to get you into a course that fits your schedule.  Changes made more than 10 days prior to the start of the course will not be subject to any fees.  If you need to change courses within 10 calendar days of the start of the original class, there will be a $25 change fee.  If you must cancel your registration within 10 days, your amount will be refunded less a $50 cancellation fee for lifeguarding and $30 for review courses.
The lifeguarding class that fits into my schedule is full.  Can you squeeze me in?
  • All classes have a wait list in the event that someone should cancel or change their class.  Occasionally, SwimRVA can assign an additional instructor to a course an open up the wait list if there are enough to fill another class
What is the registration deadline for classes?
  • You may register for a class up to 30 minutes prior to that start of the course.  Classes fill up quickly so we encourage you to sign up early.  
Will I get a refund if I do not pass the course and gain my certification?
  • We do not offer refunds to students who do not meet the testing requirements to gain certification.
